Beginning the journey from truth to reconciliation

Remembrance, reflection and reckoning

Between the end of the Civil War and the beginning of World War II, more than 6,500 Black Americans were victims of racial terror lynchings in the United States. Of those, 38 of these crimes were committed in Maryland, including at least four in Caroline and Queen Anne's Counties:

  • David Thomas, October 10, 1854 in Denton, Caroline County
  • Jim Wilson, November 1, 1862 in Oakland, Caroline County
  • John Fields, April 24, 1863 in Queenstown, Queen Anne's County
  • Asbury Green, May 13, 1891 in Centreville, Queen Anne's County

Residents in Caroline and Queen Anne's Counties will hold a public organizational meeting to discuss the importance of acknowledging the history of racial terrorism in the counties; pay respect to the victims and their families; and explore ideas for community remembrance projects as a way to begin the process of truth-telling, repair, and reconciliation. The meeting will open with brief comments from selected speakers and a screening of a short film about the last known lynching in Maryland in 1933.
