Join the Baltimore County Coalition of the Maryland Lynching Memorial Project for a live film screening and discussion
The Baltimore County Coalition of the MLMP will be hosting its 4th Annual Community Outreach Forum on January 14, 2023 at Goucher College. The in-person, free, public program will include a film screening and discussion as well as community education opportunities.
The highlight of the program will be a screening of the documentary, “Descendant.” The film follows the descendants of the Clotilda, the last known ship to have reached the United States illegally carrying enslaved Africans. Produced by Barack and Michelle Obama’s Higher Ground production company along with Questlove (a descendant of enslaved people on the Clotilda), “the film is a layered and slyly defiant portrayal of a community saddled with a shared history of unspeakable tragedy and violence. The treasure in this story is not a sunk vessel, as the interviews with its more literal-minded subjects might suggest, but a sense of justice and equilibrium that has been denied to a people that have been passing down their trauma from one generation to the next” (The Guardian, 10/21/2022).
The film screening will be followed by community conversation and additional programming.
The January 14th Community Forum is free and open to the public but attendees must register. Please join us at Goucher College’s Athenaeum, 10a-1p. Coffee, tea, juice and light faire will be provided.
