Kent County, Caroline County, and Queen Anne's County Regional Public Hearing
The Maryland Lynching Truth and Reconciliation Commission (MLTRC) will hold a Mid-Shore Regional hearing in Kent County on December 7, 2024, as part of its ongoing effort to bring awareness to Maryland's history of racial violence and to foster reconciliation in the present. Research reveals that at least five Black men were lynched in Kent, Caroline, and Queen Anne's Counties and no fewer than 38 were lynched across Maryland.
The hearing will focus on the history of lynching in the Mid-Shore Region of Maryland, including the killings of
- David Thomas (Denton, Caroline County) October 10, 1854
- Jim Wilson (Oakland, Caroline County) November 1, 1862
- John Fields (Queenstown, Queen Anne's County) April 24, 1863
- Asbury Green (Centreville, Queen Anne's County) Mary 13, 1891
- James Taylor (Chestertown, Kent County) May 17, 1892
Descendants of the victims and aggressors, expert witnesses, community members, scholars, and archivists will have the opportunity to provide testimony and make recommendations for achieving racial healing. Community members are encouraged to submit their testimony to mltrc@maryland.gov or bring their written testimony to be collected at the public hearing.
