Honoring the victims of racial terror in Allegany County and Maryland
The Allegany County Lynching Truth and Reconciliation Committee’s (ACLTRC) mission is to acknowledge and memorialize William Burns, a young African American man who was lynched in Cumberland, Maryland.
ACLTRC will remember William Burns while also helping Allegany County residents reconcile with the intergenerational harm caused by lynching and other violent acts against the African American community.
ACLTRC Action Plan- Fully participate in the Equal Justice Initiative led Community Remembrance Projects - including a historical marker and a monument
- Work with the Maryland Lynching Memorial Project and the Marlyand Truth and Reconciliation Commission to spark public acknowledgement and documentation of the history of racial terror lynchings in the state of Maryland
- Facilitate a civil and healing discourse on the history of racism between Allegany County residents through education and resource
Help ACLTRC raise funds to support our community remembrance projects, continue our historical research and documentation, and create opportunities for public discourse.
