Support the Caroline and Queen's Anne Counties Lynching Memorial Project

During the Spring and Summer of 2026, members of Caroline and Queen Anne's Counties held conversations about forming a Lynching Memorial Project Coalition and to plan soil collections for the four known victims of racial terror lynching in the region.

Join us on Wednesday, August 5, 2026 at 7:00pm for a virtual Conversation & Information Session to discuss the importance of acknowledging the history of racial terror lynchings in the counties, pay respect to the victims and their families, and explore ideas for community remembrance projects as a way to begin the process of healing and reconciliation. Registration is required to attend the session.

This marks the beginning of our journey from truth to reconciliation in Caroline and Queen Anne's Counties.

We recognize the four victims:

• David Thomas, October 10, 1854 in Denton, Caroline County
• Jim Wilson, November 1, 1862 in Oakland, Caroline County
• John Fields, April 24, 1863 in Queenstown, Queen Anne's County
• Asbury Green, May 13, 1891 in Centreville, Queen Anne's County

These men were four of the 38 documented racial terror lynchings in Maryland, and more than 6,500 across the country.

For generations this history has been dismissed, marginalized and denied. We know the legacy of lynching continues to grip our national psyche in profoundly damaging ways.

The Caroline and Queen Anne's Counties are committed to confronting the uncomfortable truth about the history of racial terror lynching in our community, to help our neighbors understand the ways in which that legacy continues to be manifest, and to promote racial healing and reconciliation in the counties and Maryland through a variety of informational and community building events, public outreach and education.
